Spice Tours

spice tours nyumbani

Zanzibar is historically known as the “Spice Island”, thanks to the economic development of the 1800s.

Extensive plantations in the central part of the island hold the vast production of spices, including cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, vanilla, ginger, cumin, saffron etc…

The spice tour involves visiting one or more of the traditional Zanzibar farms that sow, cultivate and harvest these different products. You will learn how the different spices are produced, the processing methods and their culinary and medicinal uses.

Not only spices, but also numerous fruit trees, such as mango, pineapple, papaya, banana, passionfruit, bungo fruit, staffeli fruit and many others.

These plantations encapsulate the soul of Zanzibar; indeed, local cooking is rich with fragrances and flavours, such as cardamom used in rice and meat dishes, ginger used to flavour meat and in preparing drinks, and then cinnamon, black pepper and nutmeg that add to the uniqueness of the local dishes, such as rice boiled in coconut milk with cardamom, cinnamon and cloves and the local Kahawa coffee, flavoured with cardamom and ginger and served in little porcelain cups.

You will be taken on an authentic tour that engages the senses, in discovery of the complex world of spices.

Duration: half day (fruit lunch included)
